Twelve years of education is the minimum requirement for admission to an undergraduate course in the United States. So whether it is a State Board or the CBSE or the ICSE, what you need is twelve years of schooling, excluding nursery and kindergarten years.
However, there are no minimum marks requirements, nor any specific subject requirements to be admitted to the course. TOEFL is though essential to show that you know English well enough as that is the medium of instruction.
The minimum requirement for admission into graduate programmes is a Bachelor’s degree with at least sixteen years of education. So, taking the example of India where there is a 10+2+3 year education pattern (except professional degrees like Engineering, Medicine or Architecture), you will be considered ineligible for a master’s degree programme immediately after such a BA or B.Sc degree. In that case, you may have to opt for a recognised one-year stand-along post-graduate diploma course or earn your Master’s degree in India by studying for two more years. Only then will you be eligible for admission into a graduate programme.
Completing the first year of an Indian MA will not qualify you for admission, though that completes sixteen years of study. Most the US Universities in the US require a full-fledged degree that is normally earned after sixteen years of study.
