Studying Computer Science in the US from India in 2024

Why are Students Studying Computer Science in the US from India in 2024? The world is their oyster. Knowledge factories across the world are now luring young Indians. But still, when it comes to choosing a foreign destination, the United States is the first choice among most of the Indian students. The reason is that the country offers the most dynamic and adaptable education responsive to the needs of a vast and multicultural student community.

India tops the list of foreign students studying in the US (followed by China, Korea and Japan). Although they are scattered across the US, the maximum concentration is in the University of Texas, Purdue in Indiana and Arizona State University.

The reason why overseas students look at the US is that there are more opportunities to get financial assistance for pursuing education. Earlier the candidates basically flocked to the US for higher academic studies in humanities and social sciences mainly. However, this trend has waned and in recent years, and has developed a leaning towards pure and applied sciences, engineering and technology.

Another important reason is the opportunity of doing part-time work within one’s field of specialisation and. at times, even of a general nature. It provides a student a lot of valuable work experience.

US Educational Degrees (Studying Computer Science in the US from India)

While degrees like Bachelor of Arts, Science and Engineering or Technology are called graduate degrees in India, they are termed as undergraduate degrees in the American universities.

Moreover, while most Asian and Indian colleges offer a bachelor’s course which can be completed in three years, an American who works towards a BA degree has to undergo a four-year course, not a year less.

In the US, master’s degrees are called graduate degrees unlike the post-graduate nomenclature typically given to them in Asia. A master’s degree will take a further two years of study after the four-year bachelor’s degree. It is sometimes possible to complete a master’s degree in a shorter time by seeking advanced credits.

Doctoral degrees are called post-graduate degrees. Following the master’s degree, you need to spend another three years before you earn a Ph.D. Medicine usually takes even longer.

Minimum Requirements (Studying Computer Science in the US from India)

Twelve years of education is the minimum requirement for admission to an undergraduate course in the United States. So whether it is a State Board or the CBSE or the ICSE, what you need is twelve years of schooling, excluding nursery and kindergarten years.

However, there are no minimum marks requirements, nor any specific subject requirements to be admitted to the course. TOEFL is though essential to show that you know English well enough as that is the medium of instruction.

The minimum requirement for admission into graduate programmes is a Bachelor’s degree with at least sixteen years of education. So, taking the example of India where there is a 10+2+3 year education pattern (except professional degrees like Engineering, Medicine or Architecture), you will be considered ineligible for a master’s degree programme immediately after such a BA or B.Sc degree. In that case, you may have to opt for a recognised one-year stand-along post-graduate diploma course or earn your Master’s degree in India by studying for two more years. Only then will you be eligible for admission into a graduate programme.

Completing the first year of an Indian MA will not qualify you for admission, though that completes sixteen years of study. Most the US Universities in the US require a full-fledged degree that is normally earned after sixteen years of study.

Financial Aid (Studying Computer Science in the US from India)

Arranging funding for studying in the US is the most difficult part of the business. There are few scholarships available at the undergraduate level with the exception of some privately funded universities like Harvard and MIT which offers grants.

At the graduate level, however, the scenario is somewhat brighter. There are two types of aid available: Fellowships or scholarship awards which provide a stipend for tuition fees and living expenses, and Teaching Assistantships which provide a stipend or a tuition waiver in return for assisting the professor at the University.

US Visa for Students

Procuring an American Visa has become an increasingly tough and daunting proposition. The US Embassy is highly wary of prospective immigrants and students are denied a visa even after receiving a confirmed admission to an American institution. Therefore, do your homework well and present your case in such a way that it leaves no room for doubt.
