The main duty of Forest Officers is to manage all the forests in our country scientifically. Forest Service officers and other officers under them ensure proper use of the country’s forest resources as per the National Forest Policy. They are also responsible for the conservation of forest resources, wildlife, etc. Initially, they are recruited as probationers.
Once the probationary period expires, Indian Forest Service officers are usually appointed as Divisional Forest Officers or Deputy Conservators of Forests They are responsible for a specific area or Forest Division of the Forest Department. They have to work with the assistance of the Forest Guard, Range Officer, Block Officer, Assistant Conservator of Forest, etc. Not only that, but many times they are appointed to the posts of General Manager, Executive Director, Managing Director, etc. in the State Forest Development Corporation department.
To become a Forest Service Officer
To become a forest officer, it is mandatory to graduate in science, forestry, engineering, medical, animal husbandry or agriculture. The age of the candidate should be more than 21 years and less than 30 years. Also, according to the physical standard of the Indian Forest Service Examination, the candidate should be fit. To become an officer of the Indian Forest Service, one must pass the Indian Forest Service (IFS) Examination conducted by the Central Public Service Commission. This examination consists of a written examination and then an interview. Scores of the written test and interview are added together to form the list of final candidates.
Educational Qualifications
You must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree to take this exam. In addition, the undergraduate examination must include any one of the following subjects: Chemistry, Geology, Botany, Physics, Statistics, Zoology, Agriculture, Forestry and Engineering. Those who will sit for the Graduation Final Examination in the year of application can also apply. However, the results of the tests must be published within the stipulated time. A candidate can take the examination a maximum of four times. This rule does not apply to Scheduled Castes and Tribes. Age Candidates should be between 21 years and 30 years of age in the year of application for this examination. There is an age exemption of five years for SC and ST candidates and three years for OBC candidates. The upper age exemption for physically disabled persons is 10 years.
Application Process
Application for the Indian Forest Service Examination should be made in the prescribed form. This specific application form must be purchased from the designated post office at the specified price. Advertisements for this examination are usually published in various all-India newspapers like Employment News, Telegraph, Assam Tribune, etc. at fixed times every year. Central Biquitment Fee Stamp (CRFS) of Rs. 100 should be submitted with the application form as an examination fee.
This stamp should be affixed to the designated area of the application form. No fees are charged through postage stamps, IPOs, bank drafts etc. No fee is provided for SC/ST candidates. The application form should be accompanied by two unstamped envelopes (11.5x 27.5 cm) bearing your name and address, an attendance sheet, two copies of photographs and a postcard with an additional 45-paid stamp bearing your name and address.
IFS Exam Pattern
A total of six papers are examined in the Indian Forest Service examination. The first question paper is General English (total 300 marks), and the second paper is General Knowledge (total 300 marks). Both these papers are compulsory. The remaining four question papers are optional subjects. You can choose any two elective subjects. There are two papers each. The examination will have a total of 1400 marks with a total of 200 marks per paper. Elective subjects are Agricultural Science, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Botany, Statistics, Chemical, Civil Engineering, Zoology, Mathematics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics.
Any one of these subjects has to be chosen as an elective. When choosing electives, note that certain subjects cannot be taken as pairs of electives. These include Agricultural Science and Agricultural Engineering, Animal Husbandry and Agricultural Science, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.
The questions in each subject of this examination are essay-like like university questions. In addition, the medium of questions should be English and the answers should be written in English. The time for each paper is three hours. The answer to each question should be correct and reasonable. No marks are awarded for unclear opinions. Candidates can use a calculator if required in the examination hall. Make sure that the number of words in the answers to the questions is limited.
Compulsory ordinary English roughly includes vocabulary, precision, comprehension, etc. They also let me write an essay. However, ordinary graduate candidates should not have any difficulty in preparing for the examination by learning about the quality of the questions through the old question papers.
Interview
After the written examination came the interview. An interview of 300 marks is conducted for the candidates who pass the written examination. This interview tests a candidate’s leadership ability, mental ability, etc. It is also checked whether the candidate has qualities outside the books.
